The DECivil's R&D units are part of a national network of research units supported by the Ministry of Education and Science through the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The work done in these research units benefits IST’s teaching activities, in particular the courses run by DECivil and the training actions offered by FUNDEC.
The Centre for Hydrosystems Studies (CEHIDRO) is a research unit that investigates and provides technological development services in hydraulics, water resources and the environment. It is also involved in establishing and drafting the scientific and technological policy of the DECivil. CEHIDRO is organized into research groups according to the specializations of the scientific areas of the DECivil’s Hydraulics and Water and Environmental Resources Section.
The Centre for Urban and Regional Systems (CESUR) is an interdisciplinary research unit with a focus on regional and urban planning, systems engineering, logistics, management and transport. These goals have required developing an open strategy to promote a wide range of projects aimed at solving the specific problems of public and private entities. It also encourages advanced research with a view both to improving our understanding and modelling of real systems, and to developing existing approaches to the formulation of public policies and the planning, design and management of systems.
The Institute for Structural Engineering, Territory and Construction (ICIST) is a scientific and technology research unit. It engages in consultancy and the dissemination of knowledge in the analysis and design of structures, structural mechanics, earthquake engineering, seismology, geotechnics, architecture, building engineering, the restoration and preservation of built heritage, and geomatics.
